- FARALLON INTRODUCES NEW MACRECORDER VOICE DIGITIZER - MICROSOFT MAIL USES
- FARALLON SOUND TOOLKIT
-
- Emeryville, CA—-March 21, 1990—-Farallon Computing, Inc. today announced the
- MacRecorder® Voice Digitizer. It allows users to record voice in sound-capable
- application software. Farallon also announced the new Farallon™ Sound Toolkit,
- a set of programming routines that build on Macintosh® System software to give
- developers a standard and easy way to add sound input and playback capabilities
- to their applications.
-
- Microsoft® Mail version 2.0 for AppleTalk networks is the first of many
- business applications to incorporate this sound recording, compression and
- playback technology.
-
- New More Affordable Digitizer for Voice Only
- The new MacRecorder Voice Digitizer is a more compact and simplified version of
- the original Farallon sound digitizer that comes with the MacRecorder Sound
- System. The MacRecorder Voice Digitizer contains a microphone and an eight-bit
- analog-to-digital converter. It plugs into the modem or printer (RS-422
- serial) port of a Macintosh computer. Both digitizers will work with Microsoft
- Mail and other applications that use sound.
-
- Software Included
- The Farallon Sound Driver and HyperSound™ (a HyperCard® stack) are included in
- the MacRecorder Voice digitizer package. The driver software, which goes in
- the Macintosh System Folder, lets you record and play both compressed and
- non-compressed sounds from the digitizer. HyperSound software records sound
- into HyperCard stacks.
-
- The complete MacRecorder Voice Digitizer package will be sold in both single
- and ten-packs for the convenience of large electronic mail users who want to
- make it a standard, company-wide input device.
-
- Voicemail and Other Applications
- The Farallon Sound Toolkit allows developers to build recording, compression
- decompression and playback capabilities into their applications. By adding
- voice input, application developers such as Microsoft will increase their
- products’ commercial appeal.
- Farallon has been working with leading software developers for the last year
- to encourage the use of sound in business applications on the Macintosh.
-
- Two MacRecorders: Different Applications
- The original MacRecorder Sound System includes a sound digitizer with a
- microphone input that allows connection to external microphones and a line
- input jack that allows input from CD-players, stereos, etc. It also includes
- the SoundEdit, HyperSound and HyperSound Toolkit software.
- The MacRecorder Sound System is best suited for sound editing, multimedia,
- HyperCard, and music applications. The MacRecorder Sound System has been
- shipping since January 1988, and has become the standard for recording sound on
- the Macintosh. The system remains priced at $249.
- In contrast, the MacRecorder Voice Digitizer provides a more cost-effective
- solution for users whose principal need is to add sound to productivity
- software.
-
- Pricing and availability
- The suggested retail price for the MacRecorder Voice Digitizer is $149.00.
- The 10-pack has a suggested retail price of $995.00. Both products will be
- available in May 1990. Developers interested in the Farallon Sound Toolkit
- should call John Chaffee at (415) 596-9100, Applelink: JOHNCHAFFEE.
